"A stylish, thoughtful, and scrupulously fair-minded account of what the software that increasingly governs our lives can and cannot do ... A beautifully accessible guide that leaps lightly from one story to the next without sparing the reader hard questions... deserves a place in the bestseller charts." (Oliver Moody The Times)"With refreshing simplicity, Fry explains what AI, machine learning and complicated algorithms really mean, providing some succinct explanations of the Cambridge Analytica scandal, driverless cars and many other unnerving modern phenomena…This book illustrates why good science writers are essential." (Katy Guest Guardian)"Brilliantly clear...Fry succinctly outlines the ethical issues that beset AI" (James McConnaiche Sunday Times)"Hello World is a gem of accessible science writing. With eloquence and charm, Hannah Fry outlines the maths of computer algorithms and explains how they are transforming fields such as health, justice, transport and the arts. She is a wise guide to the benefits - and horrors of our increasingly data-driven world." (Alex Bellos, author of Alex's Adventures in Numberland)"Expertly told, wise and with a lightness of touch, Hannah Fry's brilliant exploration of how we live our lives in the age of AI will prompt arguments in pubs and over dinner tables for years to come." In her book 'Hello World - How to Be Human in the Age of the Machine' mathematician Hannah Fry tries to balance her enthusiasm for elegant and powerful mathematical algorithms and their ability to solve longstanding and relevant problems with her knowledge about their limitations, their possible misuse and the resulting sometimes catastrophic 'side effects'. It's this differentiating view which makes her book appealing to anybody eager to understand the power of computer algorithms in connection with big data without ignoring the dangers related to their uncritical application. The book's chapters are titled by the fields algorithms are applied to from Justice to Medicine, to Cars, Crime and Art.Hannah Fry is capable of selecting exciting and relevant examples for the (mis)use of algorithms in these fields in a lively way, just assuming the openness of the reader to understand the underlying problem and the completely different ways this problem would be solved by humans compared to algorithms. One important message of the book, Hannah Fry stresses again and again, is the necessity to use high-impact algorithms in a controlled way. This includes understanding their assumptions and limitations as well as their consequences, intended as well as unitended ones. Given the current state of the art, she advocates for the use and understanding of algorithms as a tool for the specialist, leaving the responsibility for their use with the judge, the medical doctor or the police investigator. To me this seems to be a promising approach, which however can only work if the developers of algorithms try to communicate with these specialists much more to help them mastering these tools instead of mindlessly surrendering to an algorithm they don't fully understand.

Everything in this book is perfect: it is very interesting, easy to understand, very entertaining and well written, even funny in some parts. I bought the audiobook, and it is a pleasure to listen to the author's voice. Most of all she does a fantastic job developing the pros and cons of using algorithms in various essential aspects of our lives.

This is a great introduction into the world of algorithms - the potential and limitations and I would have given it 5 stars but for the multiple sentence fragments and poor comma choices.
